About UsThe Southern Virginia Artisan Center was opened in 2005. The Gallery located at 54 West Church Street, Martinsville, Virginia, offers area and regional artisans a new outlet to showcase and sell their original artwork. Working in union with Patrick Henry Community College and the School of Crafts and Design, students, instructors, and local established artists all contribute to the inviting character of the Artisan Center through many different mediums. Folk art, photography, paintings, and quilted artwork are only the beginning of all that is available. There are fashionable gifts of jewelry and weaving, decorative handmade baskets, pottery and stained glass. Woodworkers use hand carving and wood-turning techniques to create decorative home accents, duck decoys, and furniture pieces that are functional and useable art. The latest addition to the growing tourist attraction is the Martinsville/Henry County Visitor’s Center which is in partnership with the Martinsville Economic Development Corporation. The Visitor’s Center is a wonderful place to find information about area attractions and businesses, along with maps and brochures that provide information on the entire state of Virginia. Unlike any other community college in the state, in two short years we have gone from a plan on paper to a facility with forty talented artisans, offering quality crafts and art. |
