Reception for Terry Mitchell's Woodturning Exhibit
Sep 17, 2010 - 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
In the last two weeks of September, the Southern Virginia Artisan Center is exhibiting Terry Mitchell's Woodturning—all incredible works of art.
Terry Mitchell is a native of Henry County, Virginia, where he is an active member of the community. He has a love of art, music, and woodworking. It was in 1995 that Terry discovered that he could combine his love of art and wood through the medium of woodturning, and in the fall of 1996 he pursued woodturning at John C. Campbell School of the Arts in Western North Carolina. While attending school he learned the basic skills of woodturning, studied under two the country’s most respected wood turners, and attended seminars on advanced techniques in carving on turned wood, texturing, dying, and sandblasting. A year later,Terry purchased his own wood lathe and pursued a new career!
You will find in Terry's exhibit that his artwork is one of a kind. He thrives on creating his fine art pieces using both rare, exotic woods and native woods. He also uses the natural bark edges and inclusions to produce rare and unusual forms.
He has received numerous awards and his work is owned by art enthusiasts and collectors throughout the United States. Terry has been a member of the Southern Virginia Artisan Center for about 4 1/2 years and is also a member of the Piedmont Arts Association, , Lynwood Artist, and the American Association of Wood turners.
Terry is also the Woodturning instructor here at the School of Craft and Design through PHCC. In the fall, Terry will be teaching a Try It Out: Woodturning, Basic Woodturning, Intermediate Woodturning, and Wood Lathe Pen Turning!
